Guan Eng takes up ALS Ice Bucket challenge

GEORGE TOWN: More than a hundred people watched with glee as Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was doused with ice cold water at the Occupy Beach Street event here.

The lawmaker was grinning and clenching his fists when his wife Betty Chew stood on a stool to empty the bucket on him.

Egged on by the crowd, Chew appeared to be just as delighted as her husband in accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The challenge has already raised more than US$62.5mil (RM187.5mil) in the United States alone for the benefit of the Amyotropic Lateral Sclerolis (ALS) Association.

“It was cold. I think my wife must be the happiest person this morning,” said Lim.

K.K. Wong, a deejay of 988, a Chinese station that is part of the Star Radio Group had nominated Lim for the ice bucket challenge last week. Wong was present at the event.

The challenge was conceived to promote awareness about ALS and encourage donations to the ALS Association to fund research.

Other Malaysians who had taken up the challenge included The Star’s group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

ALS is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, and is considered to be a fatal disease.

Last week, Lim donated US$100 (RM317.37) to the ALS Association, and nominated China Press chief editor Teoh Yang Khoon and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz to take the challenge. Both took up the challenge.

At Lim’s event, seven members of the Quads Functional Training, an outdoor physical training group, also had cold water poured on them.

According to trainer Cheah Boon Chong, 30, the effort netted RM1,500 for the ALS Association.

Lim had earlier launched the Let’s Walk, Run and Zumba for Charity 2014, and said zumba would be allowed in Penang as it as a “healthy and interesting” dance.

The charity event is organised by Eden Handicap Service Centre Bhd to raise funds for a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
